 La céphalanthère de Damas (Cephalanthera damasonium) est une orchidée sauvage qui aime l'ombre des hêtraies calcicole mais cela ne l'empêche pas de bien aimer la chaleur. C'est pourquoi certaines années elle préfèrera ne pas se montrer plutôt que de devoir subir de mauvaises conditions climatiques. 

The white helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium) is a wild orchid that likes the shade of calcareous beech forests, but that does not prevent it from liking the heat.  L'orchis à deux feuilles (Platanthera bifolia) est en général, ici, la plus abondante de nos orchidées sauvages avec l'orchis mâle (Orchis mascula). Cette année, elle a un début timide. Sa saison de floraison s'étend de mai à juillet donc on a encore le temps d'en voir fleurir, mais le début est très discret. Il a sans doute fait trop froid en avril pour elles.

Il existe deux Plantanthera qui se distingue par la position des anthères et l'éperon.

chlorantha: anthères écartées et divergentes et éperon horizontal

The two-leaved orchid (Platanthera bifolia) is generally the most abundant of our wild orchids here, along with the male orchid (Orchis mascula). This year, it has a shy start. Its flowering season extends from May to July so there is still time to see it bloom, but the beginning is very discreet. It was probably too cold in April for them. 

 There are two Plantanthera which are distinguished by the position of the anthers and the spur. 

 bifolia: anthers parallel and spur long and curved towards the ground  

chlorantha: spread and divergent anthers and horizontal spur

Bonus Morio 2022

Lors de mon passage sur leur pelouse, j'avais trouvé peu de morio (Anacamptis morio). Je n'en ai pas trouvé beaucoup mais il y en avait quelques unes de plus et surtout j'ai eu la chance d'en trouver une hypochrome. Le rose est très pâle mais on voit toujours bien le casque rayé de vert.

During my visit to their lawn, I had found few morio (Anacamptis morio). I didn't find many but there were a few more and above all I was lucky enough to find a hypochrome one. The pink is very pale but you can still see the helmet striped with green.

 La néottie nid d'oiseau (Neottie nidus-avis) est une orchidée sans chlorophylle et par ce fait souvent confondue avec les orobranches. Contrairement à ces dernières elle aime les sous bois frais et ombragés. L'environnement est souvent un critère d'identification en botanique. 

Cette néottie est l'orchidée qui a permis la compréhension de la relation des orchidées avec les champignons.

 

 

 The bird's nest neottie (Neottie nidus-avis) is an orchid without chlorophyll and therefore often confused with the orobranches. Unlike the latter, it likes cool, shady undergrowth. The environment is often an identification criterion in botany. 

 This neottie is the orchid that allowed the understanding of the relationship of orchids with fungi.

Vert sur vert * Green on green (Orchidées sauvages * Wild orchids 2022 #3)

 Dans un coin de mon petit monde une discrète orchidée toute verte aime jouer avec l'ombre et la lumière. La grande listère (autrefois Listera ovata désormais Neottia ovata) est une plante nectarifère qui attire les hyménoptères mais pas seulement. On peut y voir des coléoptères et différents diptères. 

In a corner of my little world, a discreet all-green orchid likes to play with light and shadow. The large listère (formerly Listera ovata now Neottia ovata) is a nectariferous plant that attracts hymenoptera but not only. You can see beetles and various diptera there.

La vie est dure * Life is difficult

 En partant en balade ce matin, nous avons croisé une scène qui nous a rappelé que la vie est difficile pour tout le monde. La jungle ce n'est pas à des milliers de kilomètres de nous. La jungle est partout à tous les niveaux. 

Pour cette larve de hanneton elle arrive à son terme. Sa rencontre avec une compagnie de fourmis lui sera fatale. 

Going for a walk this morning, we came across a scene that reminded us that life is difficult for everyone. The jungle is not thousands of kilometers from us. The jungle is everywhere at all levels. 

 For this cockchafer larva it is coming to an end. His encounter with a company of ants will be fatal to him.

Parasite de toute beauté * Parasite of all beauty

 Les orobanches sont des plantes parasites sans chlorophylle. L'orobanche s'identifie le plus souvent par sa relation avec la plante parasitée. Celle-ci est une des plus simples à identifier avec sa belle couleur jaune et ses anthères jaunes elles aussi. La présence en quantité de luzerne dans son environnement confirme l'identification pour l'orobanche jaune (Orobanche lutea)

 

Broomrapes are parasitic plants without chlorophyll. The broomrape is most often identified by its relationship with the parasitized plant. This one is one of the easiest to identify with its beautiful yellow color and its yellow anthers too. The presence in quantity of alfalfa in its environment confirms the identification for the yellow orobanche  (Orobanche lutea)

Bien dodue * Plumpy

 Dès Avril-Mai si la météo le permet, on peut voir dans les pieds de gaillet les gourmandes larves de crache-sang (Timarcha sp). Bien dodue, d'un noir bleuté, elle dévore consciencieusement les gaillets dont elles raffolent.

From April-May, weather permitting, you can see the bloody-nosed beetle larvae (Timarcha sp) in the feet of bedstraw. Very plump, bluish black, she conscientiously devours the bedstraws they love.

Annonciatrice du printemps * Harbinger of spring #5

 Il n'y a pas que les fleurs qui annoncent le printemps. Certains insectes, certaines "mouches" le font aussi. Ainsi l'arrivée des Bibio dans les jardins annonce les beaux jours. 

Il y a quelques jours j'en avais aperçu, se préparant pour la nuit. Je suis donc venue un soir où je quittais tôt avec mon appareil et j'ai pu saisir celui-ci. 

Un mâle, les gros yeux ne trompent pas et, sans doute vu la forme des tarses, un Bibio johanni. Vu le peu de cliché permettant une identification correcte on le laissera en Bibio sp ♂.

It's not just the flowers that herald spring. Some insects, some "flies" do it too. Thus the arrival of the Bibios in the gardens announces the beautiful days. 

 A few days ago I saw them getting ready for the night. So I came one evening when I was leaving early with my camera and I was able to grab this one. 

 A male, the big eyes are unmistakable and, no doubt given the shape of the tarsi, a Bibio johanni. Given the lack of cliché allowing a correct identification we will leave it in Bibio sp ♂.

Amasseuse * Hoarder

 Il y avait un moment que je n'en avais croisé mais celle-ci fut facile à remarquer. A hauteur des yeux, sa toile avec son stabilimentum alignant des déchets, attira mon oeil. L'épeire conique (Cyclosa conica) amasse sur une ligne verticale appelée stabilimentum des déchets, des restes de nourriture dans lesquels elle se camoufle en attendant ses proies. 

nb: il existe plusieurs espèces de Cyclosa mais dans notre région conica est la seule présente. 

It had been a while since I had come across one but this one was easy to notice. At eye level, its canvas with its stabilimentum aligning waste, caught my eye. Cyclosa conica collects on a vertical line called stabilimentum waste, leftover food in which it camouflages itself while waiting for its prey.  

nb: there are several species of Cyclosa but in our region conica is the only one present.
