Turquoise * Blue

 Le petit criquet qu'est l'oedipode turquoise (Oedipoda caerulescens) passe très facilement inaperçu. Sa couleur variable lui permet de se confondre facilement avec le substrat sur lequel il repose. Par contre, dès que vous l'approchez, sans le savoir, il s'envole d'un bond dévoilant ses ailes marquée d'une large bande bleue. C'est ainsi que j'ai repéré celui-ci, par ce matin frais de septembre. Certainement une des dernières observations de l'année car c'est une espèce très sensible au froid. 

The small cricket that is the blue-winged grasshopper (Oedipoda caerulescens) goes very easily unnoticed. Its variable color allows it to be easily confused with the substrate on which it rests. On the other hand, as soon as you approach it, without knowing it, it takes off with a leap revealing its wings marked with a wide blue band. That's how I spotted this one, on this chilly September morning. Certainly one of the last observations of the year because it is a species very sensitive to cold.

Dans les hautes herbes * In the tall grass

Je vous rassure tout de suite, rien à voir avec la nouvelle des King père et fils (Dans les hautes herbes Stephen King and Joe Hill). Ici point de risque de se perdre et point de rocher. Juste de petits insectes et arachnides sans risque.

You don't need to worry, nothing to do with the short story of the King father and son (In the tall grass Stephen King and Joe Hill). Here there is no risk of getting lost and no giant rock. Just small insects and arachnids without risk.

Camouflage raté * Failed camouflage

L'identification des criquets n'est jamais une mince affaire ...
Pour celui-ci je pense au Genre Chorthippus mais je n'arrive pas à me décider pour l'espèce. Une chose me tarabuste. C'est que je n'ai pas trouvé de Chorthippus avec le bout des antennes si noir/blanc.
Si vous avez une piste je suis preneuse...

Locust identification is never a trivial matter ...

For this one I think of the Genus Chorthippus but I can not decide for the species. One thing puzzles me. It is because I didn't find any Chorthippus with the end of antennas so black / white.
If you have a track I am interested ...

Grande * Big

  

La grande sauterelle (Tettigonia viridissima). Celle ci est une femelle on voit très bien l'ovopositeur (l'épée qui faisait dire qu'une sauterelle ça coupe, mais qui ne coupe pas. Par contre elle mord très facilement surtout le mâle ;) en transparence au travers des ailes.

 

The great green bush-cricket (Tettigonia viridissima). This one is a female. We see very well the ovopositorr (the sword which made say that a grasshopper cuts. It doesn't cut but male bites easily  ;) in transparency through the wings.

C'est une grande carnassière qui se nourrit d'insectes variés, chenilles et larves diverses, mais ne dédaigne pas les végétaux. Elle était connue pour adorer se gaver de larves de doryphores ... avant l'ère des insecticides.

It's a carnivorous which feeds on varied insects, caterpillars and larvas, but doesn't disdain vegetables. It was known to adore stuffing itself with larvas of Colorado beetles before the era of insecticide.

Elle est active de jour comme de nuit et l'on peut entendre les mâles striduler à longueur de jour et de nuit.

It's active in the daytime and at night and we can hear males stridulate all day and night long.

Petite collection de sauterelle en stade larvaire donc toute petite ;)

et de decticelle cendrée (Pholidoptera griseoaptera) sauterelle qui reste toute petite même adulte ;)

And of dark bush cricket (Pholidoptera griseoaptera) grasshopper who remains quite small even grown-up;)

Sauterelle au bouton d'or * Grasshopper and the buttercup

Les sauterelles aiment les boutons d'or. Elles sont phytophages et semblent apprécier les pétales de ces derniers.

The grasshoppers like buttercups. They are plant-eating and seem to appreciate the petals of the latter.

Petite deviendra grande * Small will become big

la toute jeunette "larve" de decticelle cendrée (Pholioptera griseoaptera), étrangement, n'a pas peur de se montrer.

Quite very young "larva" of dark bush cricket (Pholioptera griseoaptera), strangely, is not afraid of showing itself.

 Devenue grande (c'est tout relatif vu que sa taille adulte est de maximum 18mm pour les femelles qui sont plus grandes que les mâles), donc devenue grande elle se cache beaucoup plus dans les grandes herbes.

Grown up and big (it is quite relative because its grown-up size is of maximum 18mm for the females which are bigger than males), thus become big it hides itself in the grass.

Gourmande * Greedy

Cette jeune gourmande deviendra une belle et grande sauterelle. Le phanéroptère commun (Phaneroptera falcata) est une grosse sauterelle verte légèrement ponctuée de noir. Essentiellement phytophage elle raffole des pétales d'ombellifères.

This young gourmand will become a beautiful and big grasshopper. The sickle bearing bush cricket (Phaneroptera falcata) is a big green grasshopper slightly punctuated with black. Essentially plant-eating it's  fond of umbelliferae petals.

une toute petite larve de sauterelle, peut être bien la Decticelle cendrée (Pholidoptera griseoaptera) mais à ce stade pas évident d'identifier.

 

A small larva of grasshopper, can be dark-bush cricket (Pholidoptera griseoaptera) but not easy to identify at this early stage.

Immense * Huge

Le Phanéroptère commun (Phaneroptera falcata) est une sauterelle de taille moyenne (jusqu'à 3cm environ pour la femelle comme ici), mais ses antennes peuvent faire jusqu'à 4 fois la longueur de son corps! Elle aime les prairies chaudes à hautes herbes. Peu farouche, elle est un sujet idéal pour les photographes.

The Sickle-bearing Bush Cricket (Phaneroptera falcata) is a medium-sized grasshopper (up to approximately 3 cms for the female as here), but its antennas can make until 4 times the length of its body! It likes the hot meadows with tall grass. Little wild, it is an ideal subject for the photographers.

A noter que je me permet l'identification sur ce juvénile car, trouvé en milieu sec, il y a peu de chance que cela soit le conocéphale des roseaux (Conocephalus dorsalis)
