The red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus) is an African species which lives in the rather dense rain forests. He is nevertheless very adaptable and is also found in cultivated areas near forests. Generally nocturnal, he can however in the dense and shaded forests be active in the morning and at the end of the day. He is omnivore, roots, bays and fruits making the majority of its meal the rest can consist of small mammals, reptiles, birds, eggs and carrions.

He lives in a group of 6 to 20 individuals led by a dominant male which marks its territory with the smelling glands of his face and by making marks with his teeth (canine forming tusks, the outside part of which is approximately 7cm).
