La grenouille commune (Pelophylax kl. esculentus) est en fait une grenouille hybride qui ne répond pas aux lois génétiques de Mendel. Ces hybrides sont appelés kleptons abréviation kl du nom vernaculaire.
Autre anomalie: ces hybrides sont fertiles et peuvent féconder les espèces dont ils sont issus pour donner d'autres hybrides. Toutefois la reproduction des kleptons entre eux n'est pas viable.
